£100M Contract to Design and Build the S8 Expressway in
Poland
11 February 2010
Scott Wilson | Europe has been awarded a major contract to
design 25km of the S8 expressway in Poland. The contract, carried
out under the Design and Build form of contract, was awarded by
SKANSKA S.A., a global contractor, working for the General
Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).
The Road Design Team in Wrocław will prepare the £2.1M
construction and detailed design of the new 25 km section of the
expressway, running from Cieśle to Syców. The design includes three
intersections, 18 engineering structures, 13 steel culverts for
animal passageways, drainage and water supply facilities.
Additionally, Scott Wilson will undertake the designer’s
supervision of the construction works carried out by Skanska
S.A.
The construction of the S8 expressway is one of the most
important road projects according to the Polish Government’s £24
billion motorway construction programme. The expressway, which when
completed will form part of the E67 international route extending
from Wrocław through Łódź and Warsaw to Białystok. The route is of
strategic importance as it connects Warsaw with Wrocław, the fourth
largest city in Poland and the centre of the historical region of
Silesia in south-western Poland. Simon Hindshaw, Managing Director
for the Europe Region comments: “We are delighted with this
commission. The Design and Build form of contract is becoming
increasingly popular in Poland and developing good working
relationships with global contractors is key to our future success.
Hopefully this commission is one of many with Skanska S.A. in
Poland.”
The value of the whole project totals £100M. Completion of works
has been planned for May 2012, i.e. 30 months from the date of
contract signature.
